Let's Make Some Moon Water!!

Just when I thought I might have run out of ideas for this blog, an inspiring possibility showed up! It seems to work that way.

I happened to come across an online talk by herbalist Adriana Ayeles on plants and their connection to the planets. Of course I was intrigued to hear her speak about the archetypal energies of the planets, how they correlate with the systems of the body and the particular medicinal plants that are called upon to heal related issues on physical, emotional and spiritual levels. Adriana refers to this as "cosmic herbalism"and "medical astrology", a practice that she says is as ancient as Sumarian tablets and has long been used by healers in many cultures worldwide.

During her talk, she focused on lunar influences and demonstrated the steps involved in making "MOON WATER."

As a trained Bach Flower Remedy person, I'm very familiar with the way Dr. Edward Bach (and many who have since followed his ways) prepared plant essences that involved placing flowers or plant matter in a bowl of purified water that was put in a sunny location. For several hours the power of the morning or midday sun would energize the water with the essence (vibrational signature) of the plant.

Moon Water involves the same process by harnessing the energy of the moon, and is done overnight under whatever lunar phase is appropriate for the medicine you want or need to prepare. The plants Adriana collected were among those connected to healing moon related issues such as imbalanced emotions or disruptive psychic energy.

You can easily find many videos and articles online that explain making and using Moon Water. There's a lot to unpack when determining which plants correlate with each body system and what lunar phase is best to work under. Here I'm focusing on the basics of making Moon Water and the method that Adriana uses for her own plant essence apothecary.

As with any healing practice, approaching the process begins with a clear intention, a humble request, an expression of gratitude, and reverential prayers. Materials are simple, and the method is similar to the plant limpia preparation mentioned a few posts ago, only it's done at night.

You will need a clean, clear vessel. She recommends an unadorned crystal bowl as opposed to a glass one, and I'm guessing this is optimal for absorbing lunar vibes. Fill the bowl with purified water, preferably wild water if you're lucky enough to live by or near a spring or other uncontaminated, natural water source. (Don't I wish!)

Collect the plants (or plant parts) you would like to use depending on your intended medicine. Fresh flowers, leaves or stems are always preferable, and since Adriana lives in Costa Rica, she was able to gather the exotic Passion Flower and Ginger Lily along with Mugwort and Borage flowers. They made a lovely combination floating in the bowl of water similar to what you see here→

Place the vessel as directly under the moon source as you can, and leave it there overnight until around 5 AM the next morning. Strain the plant matter to separate the energized Moon Water that now has many applications. It can be added to a bath or foot bath, ceremonially poured or sprinkled over the head or entire body. It can also be poured into a spray bottle to cleanse or bless an area or preserved for future internal use by adding 5% alcohol. As with other plant essences, the suggested dose for this is 3-5 drops taken before a spiritual practice such as meditation or as desired.

According to Adriana, making Moon Water under full moon rays yields the most intense result, especially if your intention involves release or reflection or completing a project or phase. Since we have a full moon in the sign of Libra coming up in a few days (Saturday, 4/12/25 in the USA), I decided to share this post ahead of time in case you would like to join me in the practice of making Moon Water.

This time, I'll be using the purest water I can get my hands on along with a glass bowl until I can find a suitable crystal one for future preparations. Some sources will tell you that using any clear glass receptacle or even a mason jar will suffice. Spring plants are just now starting to show up in my wildflower garden, so fresh material is limited to what's sprouting and budding along with my trusted ally, Rosemary and surrounding evergreens. I've repurposed this interesting bottle that I'll use to keep some of my strained Moon Water in.

This is a DIY version, but there are many possibilities to choose from when it comes to storing your healing water.

You can keep it simple or get creative and fancy by attaching a moon charm, moonstone, other healing crystals or a personal talisman to your bottle. If you prefer something already made, I found this and other inexpensive bottles and jars specifically meant for this purpose on

Anyone interested in exploring the subject further, will find lots of information and useful suggestions in this article from the recent online Farmer's Almanac (sorry about all the distracting ads).

I see this tradition as a beneficial practice any time of the year, but since April is when we celebrate Earth Day (or month), this would be a perfect time to create and foster a personal relationship that connects us to the botanical gifts of the earth and the cosmic energy that affects us all in different ways.

As always, thanks for letting me share my thoughts and journey with you. I welcome your input, so if you want to submit a comment, scroll down to the bottom of this post. If you are interested in booking a personal session, you can do this here:
