Spring has a way of announcing itself in different ways, depending on where you live and if you're paying attention. In the UK, there's the appearance of Snowdrops while in parts of the US, it's the Crocus that has been known to pop up even if there is still snow covering the ground. In my part of the country (north central Arizona zone 7b) there are Daffodils, and since we recently had an unusually warm spell, I've already seen a few Irises blooming in mid March. But this year my personal herald of spring is this group of Lupines.

Daffodils, Irises and Tulips emerge from bulbs, but Lupines were among the local wildflower mix I seeded in my garden about seven years back. They showed up at the start of the first and second springs and then decided to go dormant during the following seasons...until this year, that is.

Aside from a milder winter season, I couldn't help but wonder why.

I asked myself if there was another explanation for the sudden re-emergence of these flowering stalks and how they came to bloom in a place quite a distance from where the seeds were originally scattered. They appeared about as near to my back door as possible. I've learned that one of the signs that a plant is attempting to get your attention is to grow where you don't expect it and close to your home. This was true of my Lupines on both counts.

I recognized the first signs right away as the distinctively attractive leaves appeared in star like clusters gathering around an old fashioned decorative pump in the corner of one of my garden boxes. Then the stalks flowered into a deep blue.

Aside from appreciating their obvious beauty, researching the more subtle meanings behind these Lupine stalks yielded different explanations of what their significance is. Several internet websites relate them to the planet Mars which gives them masculine energy that suggests action and resilience. But the one common thread that I came across is that they are connected spiritually to creativity.

So I decided on a journey to the spirit of my personal Lupine visitor to see what he might have to say. This time I wanted to be more specific, so my question was about how I (or anyone reading this post) can foster more creativity. Sitting near them as they swayed with the March mountain breeze, I was eased into a meditative state. I received a brief but helpful suggestion--to listen more to music, the kind that gently raises the consciousness to a higher vibration. This would help create an atmosphere where divine inspiration can work its magic.

Usually, I tend to favor silence, but now I'm exploring ways to incorporate music more often and some possible choices that would work for me. So if this suggestion speaks to you, I'm sure you have some of your own preferences. If you want, you can join me in thanking the spirit of this plant for sharing its wisdom.

Just the other day, I noticed a huge bumble bee also appreciating my garden box Lupines. They now share the spotlight with a few early California Poppies, and the other day I spotted this baby boy just starting to flower several feet from his big brother.

In case you're wondering about the white fluff in the upper right corner, that's the spring song emanating from the local Cottonwood trees. They are yet another sign that the season is changing, and watch this space for what these trees have to say.

As always, thanks for letting me share my thoughts and journey with you. I welcome your input, so if you want to submit a comment, scroll down to the bottom of this post. If you are interested in booking a personal session, you can do this here:
