I recently noticed a moderate spike in my blood pressure numbers. If anyone is thinking "stress" well, yes, that's likely a huge part of the problem to continually work on managing. However as a plant medicine junkie, one promising natural remedy that came to mind in dealing with this issue is HIBISCUS. This impressive flower has been shown to support heart health, along with bringing other benefits that you can see in the following short video:

I've started drinking organic tea made by a reputable company that prepares the dried petals in tea bags. The tea has an intense, red color and a tart, citrus like flavor.

Brewing tea is a simple and self explanatory method, but if you're interested in the tropical drink recipe that this you-tuber refers to here as "Zobo," you'll find it at this link.

As she says, the Hibiscus flower blooms in hues of pink, red and yellow and in a variety of species such as the lovely, pink blossoms of the Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus) that I touted in a recent post. From what I gather, the Hibiscus sabdariffa variety offers the most heart healing medicine. Its popular name is "Roselle,"which is actually a white flower with a red center. The brilliant red color you immediately see in the brewed tea suggests the plant's innate wisdom that supports the blood and how efficiently it moves through the heart via the body's circulatory system.

The Hibiscus flower has earned its global reputation in plant medicine history over the centuries for both its internal and topical benefits. It is said to be ruled by Venus which gives it a special affinity with the feminine qualities of beauty, creativity and harmony and associated with the element of water. The flower itself is in several ways both nurturing and renewing. According to herbalist Adriana Ayeles, in addition to offering cardio vascular support, it "dissolves blockages in the first and second energetic centers, (chakras) opening the channels at the base of the spine, reproductive centers, and lower back." (Interestingly enough, the color red is associated with the first or root chakra.)

In many countries, the Hibiscus is considered a sacred flower, often used in religious ceremonies and rituals. It's significance varies from one culture to another. One of the yellow varieties (Hibiscus brackenridgei ) serves as the state flower of Hawaii, one that is unique to these islands and thought to be a symbol of their tropical beauty and "aloha" spirit. To the Chinese, it represents one's personal success and social standing . In Hindu culture, the vibrant red flowers that you see dominating this month's plant medicine card (see above) are associated with the passion and transformative power of the goddess Kali who I believe is also depicted here.

Humans are not the only ones drawn to the striking appearance and healing medicine of this plant. Notice that there are also two hummingbirds in flight around the flowers shown on the card.

Watching these tiny, winged creatures can be immediately uplifting since their quick, energetic movements radiate life and happiness! This would explain why the subheading of the card is JOY.

The size and shape of the flower allows these birds easy access to the nectar that helps to sustain them. By becoming familiar with and taking advantage of Hibiscus medicine, we also have the opportunity to benefit from its healing wisdom physically, emotionally and spiritually!
